Help Welcome New Immigrants:
We are currently looking for folks, families or singles to help welcome new immigrants to the Ottawa area and help them acclimatize to Canadian culture.
Invite them for dinner, take them shopping, help them register children for school, give them opportunities to practice English conversation skills…the possibilities are as endless as your imagination and time commitments allow.
Transportation Needed: We are always seeking drivers to transport seniors to and from medical appointments, grocery shopping, special events and social opportunities. If you are available to assist in transporting seniors to and from their homes your help is needed.
Kosher Meals on Wheels: Drivers who can deliver on short notice are always at a premium. We drive meals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Can you help?
TeleShalom: We are currently seeking volunteers to place a daily calls to seniors. This is something that you can do from your home, office or cell phone and will only take a little time. If you are able to volunteer in this way please let us know.
Friendly Visiting: Requests come in constantly from family members needing a visitor for a shut-in. Weekly, bi-weekly or ad-hoc opportunities are waiting to be filled by someone with a little time and a lot of heart. Chat over coffee, take in a show, go bowling ….the opportunities are only as limited as your imagination. Can you help break isolation for a senior?
Making Connections: Gutten Tog Program. Many of our seniors are living in long term care facilities. They would benefit from a visit; once a week, every other week or once a month.
Miriam’s Well: The monthly fruits and vegetables program needs more people to help with the distribution.
Craft Club: Can you help a few seniors work on an art project? Let us know.
Home Assistance: From time to time we get requests from seniors to find someone to help them de-clutter their homes. We are looking for volunteers to assist us with this. If you have some time and like to organize things this opportunity could be for you.
Do you have a special talent? Come share it at our next celebration, senior programs or a monthly luncheon. JFS hosts several monthly seniors’ luncheon programs, and we are always on the lookout for specialists, artists, musicians, and others who can present for about 45 minutes in exchange for a hot lunch in great company.
Share Your Expertise: From time to time, we receive requests for things like filling out forms, putting up a Sukkah, changing dishes for Passover, and the like. If you have an expertise to share with someone in need, please let us know.
Please Note: Mileage incurred by volunteers is always reimbursed by JFS.
